Help CRS Respond to Global Emergencies |
Floods. Hurricanes. Food Crisis. Conflict. When emergencies arise, chances are Catholic Relief Services is already on the ground working by the time you hear about it. Sadly, August and September’s global weather patterns often bring disastrous consequences to much of the developing world. We wanted to update you on how we are responding to several recent emergencies. |

| Relentless Hurricanes and Storms in Haiti and Cuba |
| |
 |
In Haiti, an unprecedented series of storms has resulted in massive flooding, where people were already suffering due to the global food crisis. CRS immediately provided enough food to feed 20,000 people for 15 days, as well as emergency supplies such as water purification kits and bottled water.
Striking less than 10 days apart, hurricanes Gustav and Ike tore through Cuba causing an estimated $5 billion in damages. Over half a million homes were damaged or demolished. Many are without electricity or water, and schools, hospitals and farms have sustained severe damage. CRS and our partners are responding with an initial shipment of 170,000 pounds of food and supplies. Several subsequent shipments will be made over the next few weeks with the aim of reaching at least 20,000 Cubans.

| Severe Flooding in India and Nepal |
 |
Monsoon floods in South Asia have devastated parts of India and Nepal, severely affecting more than 3 million people, many of whom have lost their homes and are living in crowded relief camps.
In India, CRS provided rescue boats and with our partners, is distributing essential supplies and food to 100,000 people, as well as fortified biscuits for children and pregnant women. In Nepal, CRS and our Caritas partner are providing food and supplies such as mattresses, mosquito nets, flashlights and batteries to 25,000 affected people.

Your help is needed for the continued response to these devastating floods in South Asia.
